PaniCast 56 Just for Justin

This one is for Justin and his friends and family.

Some really tasty selections this week. Chosen for the quality of guitar work by Houser primarily. Thanks to Kevin Hopkins for the suggestions.

Sorry for the quality of the New Orleans show, that is the best I've got. And the cut in that Vacation from Australia is unavoidable but Houser's jamming is top notch....

PaniCast 55 Craig Thomason Trust

Craig Thomason - September 6, 1976 - September 6, 2007

This cast is dedicated to the memory of Craigy T.

He was diagnosed with melanoma in August and died three weeks later. He had no health insurance so his friends and family are putting on a fund-raiser, Craigstock, next weekend September 22 and 23 in Winter Park, CO. If you cannot make this event I strongly encourage you to help out with a donation to the Craigy T Fund. It is enough of a shock to lose a son suddenly without having to pay huge medical bills.

If you'd like to send a donation, mark your donation to the Craigy T Fund and send it to the Grand Mountain Bank, P.O. Box 429, Fraser, CO 80442.

More info about Craigstock on Sept 22 and 23 found here.

Craig was a great guy, a passionate musician and a first class Widespread Panic fan.
He attended the University of Kentucky and graduated in 1999. So I've chosen some selections from his alma mater as a tribute to him. We then finish things off with a request from Joe, a Four Cornered sammy from 2001.

PaniCast 54 Total Request Live

This 'Cast consists of 100% listener requests -
and I must say you folks have good taste!

We start things off with a little snippet of an interview from 1993 in Minneapolis.
"Well, 'No' is a big word..."

We then bounce forward to 1999 in JB's hometown of Cleveland. Pay attention - 19 minutes into the 'cast JoJo hooks up with the drummers and starts incessantly teasing a Big Chief jam. Dave follows suit, the horns get in synch and soon we have a giant Big Chief marching around the venue. That's a request of an anonymous listener!

Then we have a special treat - a Barstools rap from July of 1986, six months before it appears in the setlists as a song!

That Barstools rap segues into Coconuts, but I decided to switch things up and play the Coconuts encore of that Cleveland 1999 date.

Then another treat - Cardboard Box. Thanks Chris Whitestone for the request. A rare Mikey instrumental... really love the tension that is built mid-way through that song. It seemed to fit perfectly as a segue into our next selection.

Low Spark > Dream Song > Low Spark - this is the encore from a show in May of 1998 in Santa Barbara, CA. It takes some serious kahonas to slow things down and play Dream Song during an encore and this one does not disappoint. Thanks to Stuart Chandler for the request.

No matter what some people say, Dream Song is one of my favorite encore songs. I find it gives me a physical and mental breather. Perhaps even a little head space to reflect. In any case I believe JB when he sings, "You know you can, because you've lived so many lives before, in your dreams."

And finally another anonymous request. I am a sucker for Let's Get the Show on the Road but when paired with Tie Your Shoes I am an ALL-DAY sucker... wow!

Thanks for listening, tell your friends about us and keep sending those requests - if I've got it and it is from before 2002 I will do my best to play it for you.

PaniCast 53 Lost Summer - REDUX

WHEW! That took some time...
I hope you are all still waiting patiently - I promise the next few weeks will be worth the wait!

I turn around and May has turned to September. What happened to our summer?

As an ode to our lost summer I put together some selections from August in Panic History for your enjoyment. I literally went through the archives and pulled an August performance from each of the years we had on the hard drives through 1999. We are missing some critical August performances from 87, 88 and 91 but the examples we have here are good ones.

Bird Song features Kelly Jo Davis on vocals. Normally I am not a big fan of Bird Song as performed by Widespread, but this version shines - JB's vocal play with Kelly Jo is subtle and Houser's playing is unhinged.

The 1989 selection from the Wetlands is pure five piece Panic - And I've always had a soft spot in my heart for it. It happens to be the very first live performance by the band I ever heard on tape or otherwise.

What can you say about a 1990 Holden Oversoul other than tempo, tempo, tempo! Some serious funky Panic happening mid-way through this one.

Sunny is feeling it after It Ain't No Use and JB is feeling it during Last Straw... Todd is firing on all cylinders, Dave and Houser intertwine nicely and JoJo finds some interesting fills during this awesome matrix recording of a HORDE performance from 1992.

Flat Foot Flewzy from a Oak Mountain HORDE date in 1993 featuring John Popper on harmonica may be the highlight of this broadcast... Really sick - partly because Popper refused to give up the lead and Dave's vocal antics. "Holy shit" is right.

Pilgrims is from the encore of a show in Lubbock. JB says something way in the background (before Dave yells, "Lubbock") that I can't make out. Something about tractors... if anyone can make out what he is saying, please share. Plus listen to what Garrie is talking about at the end there.... you could take your ticket across the street to a bar and drink all night for free?! I'd be willing to bet that bar lost money that night!

Can't Find My Way Home was the encore of the second night of a two show run at the Vic in Chicago. "Thank you, good night!"

"I'm gonna cut myself and forget about her!"
Although the Last Dance from Germany has a missed cue part way through it is well played - plus hearing Dave count to four in German is worth including it, don't you think?
"Eins, zwei, drei, vier!"

I hope you enjoyed this week's cast - TELL YOUR FRIENDS WE'RE BACK!
Thanks.

The Boxes Will Swallow You!

Swallowed by our own stuff

Alot of people have been asking when we'll be back -
As you can see from the picture above we have had our hands full.

It is all good - we were able to sell our lovely home in Longmont and have moved into the home in Boulder. We have alot of work to do to get comfortable but within the next two weeks I should have the next podcast ready to go. Sorry for the delay!

You'll be hearing me very soon, I promise!

OH - does anyone need a washer or a dryer? We've got two washers and a dryer that are under one year old for sale - $75 each! Let me know....

PaniCast 52 Pleas, we'll be right back...

Well it is official - Lisa and I have purchased a home in Boulder and will be moving this month. We currently have our lovely home on the market in Longmont - we've poured alot of love and sweat into this place. Check it out here.

Meanwhile, on Sunday night while Lisa was working to get the house ready she sliced her left index finger. Nearly took the tip clean off... here's what it looked like 24 hours after the incident. [puke]

As we've been packing and moving and painting we've been facing our past in a very concrete way. Our history is right in front of us as we load those boxes and cover over old paint. As we sweat, fret and work ourselves so hard we draw blood, we are reminded of why we moved to this place and to this state. It all goes back to one weekend in 1996 when we visited a friend in Boulder and also saw Widespread Panic at Red Rocks.

Lisa, Maureen and I flew out to Denver from Chicago the morning of May 31st and rented a car. I remember driving up I-70 into the foothills of the Rockies getting excited to finally see the fabled venue. As we turned south on US 6 we saw a young and lonely looking guy hanging out at the first entrance. We stopped and introduced ourselves. It was Daniel Gold. That first entrance is never open for concerts and so we proceeded into the venue and parked past the trading post but near the East entrance to the venue. And happened to park next to Gabby who had been on a mountain bike riding trip in Utah. We sat in the shade of the rocks and drank Sammy Smith's and Budweisers. We met up with Danny and Leigh and Chris and Trudi and Gardy and had a wonderful show. After the show Maureen hooked up with Mike Remmers to catch a ride to the next show in Utah. He bounded down the seats at Red Rocks like an excited mountain dog. What a great guy he was.

This trip was the seed, the catalyst for our life's journey to Colorado. We've made a home here and spread out our roots. So it is on the occasion of moving from our first home in Colorado that we look back and remember that day 11 years ago....

PaniCast 51 The Five Headed Monster

Podcast #51 is the first of our second year doing this - and when I say 'our' I mean 'my.'

This week features selections from the February 27, 1992 show at the Masquerade in Atlanta. This show has no keyboardist and is an interesting view of the band in transition; a year earlier T. Lavitz had just joined and in a matter of days JoJo would join the band. I've heard some refer to this period as the 'five headed monster.'

This show is also notable because it features some new tunes including Diner (2nd time played, featuring JB's original lyrics about building a rocket to the moon), Better Off (2nd time played), Hatfield (3rd time played), and Wondering (2nd time played). It also features the return of L.a. and Walk On to the repertoire.

PaniCast 50 One Year Older... and Wiser?

This week we celebrate our one year anniversary of the Podcast... hard to believe, really. Thanks for listening each week and allowing me to spin a few selections for you.

I recently saw some previously uncirculated Widespread on bt.etree.org and thought I would share it. I recommend listening to the following loud and with your eyes closed.

The material from 1992 has been selected because the band is just TEARING through these songs. In particular I enjoyed listening to Todd beating the skins like a madman and Mikey burning through the leads on these songs. The Flewzy is an interesting one and features some adjusted lyrics - for those fans who were around in 1997 you might just recognize what Dave is singing about there. I might bring you more from this 10/15/99 Warfield show in the future, but this is what would fit this week, so it'll have to do for now.

Thanks for listening - I look forward to doing this each week, so knowing you are all listening and reading means alot. Make sure to click comment below to let us know how we can improve your listening enjoyment!

PaniCast 49 End of Spring Tour Highlights Round DEUX

Last week we featured tracks from the end of spring tour 1997, this week we'll bring it back to present day Widespread Panic. By many accounts the band played some amazing stuff on Spring tour and seemed to gain confidence as the tour developed. This week we're bringing you some highlights from a few of the final shows of this spring tour.

I especially like the Protein Drink > Sewing Machine with Vic Chesnutt and John Keane. These brute. tunes are performed with gusto. Mr. Michael Houser would be proud.

PaniCast 48 - Meanwhile, 3,650 days later

This week marks the tenth anniversary of the end of the infamous Spring Tour 1997. I had the good fortune of seeing six of these shows and look back on this time in my life with fondness and more than a little nostalgia. Along with classic shows at the Vic and Aragon in Chicago, I braved more than a little sleepiness to attend the end of the tour stop in St. Paul, MN. This taught me an important lesson; if there is nothing stopping you but a lack of sleep, GO!

Alot of ground has been covered from this time period (April - May 1997) in our podcasts this past year so I tried to steer away from the more obvious highlights from some of the classic shows - but I couldn't resist the Jingo Jam from 4/27/97! Sections of music like the Sleepy Monkey, Tie Your Shoes combo from 5/8/97, the Stop Go > Wondering from 4/27/97, B of D > Goin Out West from 5/10/97 and many others should be sought out and listened to. Do yourself a favor and find any show from April and May 1997 and I dare you to find a dog in the bunch. The band was in fine form and each and every one is played with effortless high energy.

PaniCast 46 (or is it 420) Music for the Planet

Earth Day is upon us and I strongly suggest each of you pick up the following double disk of live music goodness - Music for the Planet. In collaboration with bands such as Widespread Panic, Phish, The Grateful Dead and thirteen others Nugs.net has produced this exclusive compliation to benefit Rock the Earth, a non-profit environmental advocacy group.

Do something for yourself, get some great music and help secure a sustainable future for us all - pick up the CD here.

Did you know it's April 20th today?!
I figured I would go back and find what I had from performances on April 20th and present some highlights. April 20, 1990 makes the cut here for intro music with Snorkle Search. This is a free-form jam that was named by Larry Acquaviva, a former roadie who took extensive notes during shows. We've kept this piece of 'Larry's Code' in the database as a tribute to Larry's contribution to the project, which is extensive. I also had highlights from 4/20/1993 but frankly they just weren't very good...

PaniCast 45 Impossible April First Fun

April 1, 2007 - photo by Thomas G. Smith

Ten years ago I attended the first of the nearly thirty shows I ended up seeing in 1997. It was in St. Louis at the American Theater (now named the Roberts Orpheum Theater).

Lisa and I drove down with Maureen and Valerie Dahl, stayed with Lisa's parents in Bridgeton, MO and had a wonderful time at the show. I hooked up with Garrie Vereen after the show and he handed to me a garbage bag full of setlist notebooks. These notebooks are the ones he had been keeping since 1992, and I used them to check information against the Everyday Companion published in December of 1996.

SO I thought I'd present some highlights from that show as well as some recent highlights from thew April 1st show in Albany, NY. Ned Stein did such a wonderful job writing about this show I thought I'd check it out and sure enough his words were true! I was going to also feature the Do What You Like from this show as it features a Take Five tease from Jimmy and JoJo but ran out of time... make sure to go to LiveWidespreadPanic.com and download the show to listen for yourself!

PaniCast 44 New Song/Classic Jams

photo by Curtis George, from Houston, 3/23/07

This week we feature some brand new material from Spring tour and then some ten year old material from San Francisco.

Since everyone has great access to recent material through LiveWidespreadPanic.com as well as sites like PanicStream.com and DigitalPanic.org I try to steer away from featuring too much new stuff - Being able to pick up a soundboard of the show within days of it happening is to me an offer none of you should refuse....
SO, make sure to pick up some of tasty soundboards of the recent action at LiveWidespreadPanic.com.

I am very excited to see the band bringing out some new originals this spring, and among them I find Shoes On Tight to be my favorite. I also enjoyed listening to the Guilded Splinters (and the jam that followed) from Kansas City. Finally, this past week marked the tenth anniversary of some epic Panic, including a two night run at the Warfield in San Francisco, so I am featuring some tracks from one of those shows.

Inspired by the Ain't Life Grand album performance from the first set of a Red Rocks show in 2001 and the epic first Surprise Valley played at Red Rocks in 1999 we've put together this week's cast. We took the songlist for 'Til the Medicine Takes and found the 1st time played for each song - despite the sources' quality varying wildly we've tried to make this as seamless as possible. PaniCast 40 Havin' a Ball

Well folks, we've got a treat for you this week. Discovering a previously unlabelled jam is actually a song is a rare reminder that anything is possible when you are dealing with a band who has played over 2,000 shows over the course of 20+ years.

This past week a fan pointed out that there is a song on Michael Houser's MySpace page labelled Analyze. That fan went on to say he had also discovered another version of the song. We have no idea who maintains the MySpace page but there is no doubt that there was something to this information. As it happens I had just listened to the 7/27/94 show as I was doing research for the Rarities cast and recognized the song Analyze from MySpace - we had had it labelled Havin' a Ball. What we've found is that Havin' a Ball has a related jam - similar song structure but different melodies.

After some deliberation with some of my friends and the community over at Digital Panic I am proud to present to you Analyze and Havin' a Ball.

Here's how it goes down this week:

PaniCast 39 Playing to 10 or 10,000

A listener wrote in asking to hear selections from the Stone Balloon or Hammerjacks - unfortunately I only had one of the two in the archive, the Stone Balloon.
This classic college bar no longer exists, except in the hearts of it's former patrons.

While I was looking for this show on disks and drives I ran across a show from a few days earlier at the Imperial Room, Concord Resort Hotel in Kiamesha Lake, NY. The location itself sounded interesting so I checked it out. The venue is one of the old classic 'Catskills' hotels in it's hey day. It has since fallen into disrepair.
Imperial Room at the Concord Resort

It sounds like there are maybe 50 people at this show - you can hear banter between band members at the start of Maggot Brain and JB thanking some one, presumably a crowd member, for a beer; "Probably be warm by the time you got up here. Cheers." In any case, this is another one of those examples of the band playing to 10 as if they are 10,000, if I may once again misquote Col. Bruce. The Let's Get the Show on the Road is started by JB before the feedback has died down at the end of Chilly Water, and I am guessing he is playing ONE MORE before the club shuts them down. You may need to TURN UP the Let's the Show on the Road - it is pretty quiet.

And finally there are a few selections from a classic and still vibrant venue, Ziggy's in Winston-Salem. Todd is ON FIRE for these two songs and the jam between the two songs remind me of Blight.... ENJOY!

PaniCast 38 Analog Memories

Thanks again to everyone for the comments and suggestions on the cast, I'll do my best to get to Busted and Longer Look out ther for you next time around.

One of the people who has been listening and recently contacted me was Corey Diamond, a Canadian Panic fan that I traded tapes with in the 90's and ended up meeting in 1997. He requested a WICKED Papa's Home from 1993. I searched through all of my various forms of media (DAT, CD, FLAC, SHN and Analog tapes) and found that the only version of this show that I have is on Analog. I've been meaning to pull a few gems from the analog collection to share with you all so I figured this was as good a time as any. So all o fthe selections from this show are from old analogs that I could not find a digital version for. A digital version may in fact exist, but I don't have it...

By the way, if anyone recognizes the song that JoJo is TEASING at the end of this Papa's Home I would really appreciate it if you could help me identify that song. I feel like a total moron because I just can't place it!

In any case here is the playlist:

This week I am bringing you a selection of obscure tunes... some more obscure than others. We start everything off with It Was You, sung by Todd. It Was You was only performed 6 times in 1997 and once in 1998.

Junco is a New Orleans traditional, and Solace is a Ragtime traditional.

For the longest time I thought Cardboard Box was a phantom name for a jam, along the lines of Snorkle Search. There is no Snorkle Search but there IS a Cardboard Box!

The Lullabye for NYC can also be heard on Houser's solo album, Door Harp. I HIGHLY recommend this disk.

PaniCast 36 New Blue Rolling in Between Doors Records

Another week another Cast...

You folks have all been so supposrtive of what we are doing here and at the main site... here are a few songs for a few of you who have sent kind words lately.

We start off with the obscure original New Blue (click here for lyrics). Only played three times in fall 2001, JB pulled this out in his performance with Sam Holt last weekend at Hannah's Buddies. We then are treated to an old school Hatfield featuring a Riders on the Storm tease and JB rapping about Hatfield's mama playing Doors records. And then a song of my choosing, Diner. This monster from 1998 may be my favorite version of this song.... Then some silliness from Dave with the Who cover Magic Bus and finally we round out the classic rock tributes with a guest performance. Robby Krieger of the Door plays guitar on this sprawling version of Light My Fire.

PaniCast 34 Serendipity

No real theme this week - I just pulled together some kick ass jams from early '97.
I recently exchanged emails with Ned Stein, which reminded me of the Rochester 97 show.
Which reminded me of the Indy show for some reason....
So I then decided to stay in spring 97 mode and
listened to Michael Wilker's remaster of the April 8, 1997 Las Cruces show.

And then I heard from Fred Adams via email this week -
and I remembered that Houser's birthday was the 6th.

Happy birthday Mikey!

PaniCast 32 New Year's Special Part 1

We're brewing up another blizzard here in Colorado, but in Atlanta it is 60 degrees. This NYE Special is dedicated to those who have been before and cannot make it to the New Year's festivies this year (like me). For those of you who were planning on it but physically could not leave Denver International Airport, for you I dedicate part 2!

1996 was a memorable year for me and the Everyday Companion. In spring 96 I received my Master's degree and in Winter 1996 we published the first Everyday Companion. The New Year's Eve shows at the Fox Theatre would be the debut of this first hand made, home made volume. I had the good fortune of seeing Panic at a small intimate gathering at the Morton Theater in Athens on December 28th but did not realize the best was yet to come! Lisa and I had good fortune looking down on us, or maybe a guardian angel. Third row in front of Houser for all three nights at the Fox in Atlanta in 1996.

After the shows I wrote on Spreadnet that I thought some part of me 'would always be in row CCC' and I still feel the same way. I met so many great people at these shows, folks who would end up being even better friends. I feel a warm glow sweep over me whenever I remember the fog in Athens on the night of the 28th and when I recall hugging Lisa in the swaying orchestra pit.

Without further ado - New Year's Eve run 1996 brought to you in two parts.

PaniCast #26 Midwest Madness

Midwest midweek midlife crisis madness!

This week we feature highlights from the band's recent journey through the western upper midwest - Ames > Sioux Falls, SD > Omaha.

There is so much to bring to you this week that I am experimenting with a 2 hour cast - hopefully this works for everyone - we will see, thanks for your patience.

Here's what you will hear this week:

I ended up driving by myself from the plains of Colorado through Nebraska to Des Moines. I left before dawn and had already been on the road for about two hours when the sun finally rose directly in front of the hood of my Honda, floating for a second like an interstellar hood ornament. The flats of Colorado and Nebraska gave way to the gentle river formed hills of western Iowa. I had the fortune of being able to stay with family in Des Moines which gave me the opportunity to take my nephew Nolan to the Ames show.
Nolan Strauss

We drove up a little early so we could eat some dinner at People's Bar and Grill. This notorious venue was visited by Widespread twice in the early ninties, including one stop in 1994 to play for 100 people or so. The food was okay - I had a burger that was decent barfare but the salad was limp and there was NO SOAP in the men's bathroom - inexcusable. I think People's may have seen better days unfortunately.

It was chilly outside, with a crisp breeze and overcast skies. Despite the chill the Iowa fans had set up a pretty decent shakedown in the lot, with food, beverages, shirts, stickers - I even saw some used books! After a celebratory Sammy Smith's Oatmeal stout, a tradition of mine that goes back fifteen years, I was ready to start the musical chapter of my tour.

This was a reserved show and I was able to secure a sixth row ticket that was nearly centered in this funky cement auditorium. There was something about this place that reminded me of an elegant post-modern silo. I ended up in the same row as Bobby Hanson... a guy that Lisa and I met at a Grateful Dead show in 1995 and then ran into at various random midwest jam band events. It was good to see him although I bone-headedly forgot who he was. Sorry Bobby.

Show time and the band worked out some standards like Can't Get High and Better Off. And man was it LOUD! I felt the playing for this set was a little tentative, but maybe that was just me. This being my first Jimmy show I was mainly paying attention to the interplay between the players. All in all the band was hanging together really well. However, with the exception of a a few small jams, they never really took flight during that first set. Fishwater opened the second set and gave me a very good glimpse of what occurs when the band turns Jimmy loose on a jam. He solos with an such an unrelenting brilliance it is sometimes hard to remember he's only been playing this band for a few weeks.

They turn the corner out of drums into Space Wrangler. The main 'theme' of the song came around and it was time for Jimmy to step up to play that recognizable melody. You could see him lock into the bassline and feel him counting off in his head - and a few of those times he almost missed his cue and would catch Dave staring at him. I am not sure if Dave was givin him googly eyes or what but Jimmy would crack a smile and giggle as he played that signature melody. Even when this guy is missing cues he is having fun and the music doesn't suffer.

The highlight of the second set was the Let's Get the Show on the Road, which was beautifully played and really forced the band to jam, listen, and decide on the fly where to jump back in around Jimmy's solos. The Walkin' featured the hard stop which brought a HUGE smile to my face...

And I kept smiling right through the encore. Expiration Day is one of my favorite Vic covers - there is something about JB belting out the line "I love my job" that once again reminds me that this band's working-man's ethic is something I've always identified with. Walk On was the final song of the show and the highlight for me. Lisa loves this tune and I found myself thinking of her as I boogied and shook. I think Nolan had a good time and I think I even caught him shaking it a couple of times!

We got back to the homestead around 11:30 and I updated the website with the setlist and chatted online with the folks at PanicStream... some dude who's handle is "threef" had obviously been there too and we traded tid bits about the show for the benefit of those in far-flung places who could not make the show.

The next morning I was picking up Whim Marsh in Omaha, so I got on the road early, around 8:30. I've written previously in this blog about my brother Daniel and his amazing ability to drive extremely long distances solo. Well Whim is this week's tour stud. I ran into him in the Verizon store in Longmont and convinced him that he should come with me to the Omaha and Sioux Falls shows. He took the Amtrak from Denver to meet me in downtown Omaha. I knew the plan was going to work when I got a voice mail from him; "Captain Panic, this is sergeant Widespread, reporting for duty, on the ground in Omaha!"

Being in Omaha afforded us the opportunity to check into our hotel before making the three hour drive to Sioux Falls. That's right, for reasons I am not going to go into here, we were going to spend the night in Omaha after the Sioux Falls show, which means we would have to drive the three hours south AFTER the show... In the end it all ends up being worth it though, trust me!

We drove directly north across the flat vast fields of extreme westen Iowa. Our conversation helped the road fly by and before we knew it we were standing outside the venue staring at the band's buses.

We both needed lunch so we wandered down the hill to an old section of town - we asked a meter maid where we could get a bite to eat and once the word "diner" came out of her mouth we knew where we were going.

I had a chocolate malt, corn chowder, salad, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans and fried chicken fingers. I was READY for a show now!

Chocolate Shake for Whim

We hooked up with my old friend Garrie, who got us access to the venue to watch the soundcheck and drink a tallboy. There were other fans there for the soundcheck, leading me to believe there was some sort of local contest held through a local radio station. It was cool to see John Keane sing the vocals to Woodstock and the band played two tunes and left the stage - I think JB said "This is the first time we've had anyone dancing at a soundcheck," a statement I am sure is not true.

I found out later that the band wanted to soundcheck halloween songs without fans there. I don't blame them but part of me really regrets not trying HARDER to stick around.

Whim and I stop for a beer and finish our first one at about 5:50. Doors are at 6:00. Shall we stay for a beer or go and try for good seats? It is a GA show and so we opt for the seats. On entry to the venue we discover that the orchetra pit is going to be restricted to the first 30 or 40 people who get wrist bands. I am first in the pit and spy two seats in the front row in front of Dave. It is a sign. I'm not one who has spent alot of time in the front row - maybe one show in the past 14 years. This was going to be a treat. I look back into the theater just before show time... there's maybe 550 people there. The balcony is empty. I love small town shows!

Sioux Falls 10 minutes before show time

They open with Pigeons - always a favorite of mine in the opening spot. The boys are smoking the jam and turn the corner into Who Do You Belong To? Are you kidding? Is this a rhetorical question? The boys are on and we can feel it. Time Waits (Body and Soul) was a great treat for a slow song before JoJo kicks out a killer Greta and the band prepares for flight...

As they wail away Dave and JoJo hook up to change the tempo and a Riders on the Storm tease gives way to a Nobody's Fault but Mine! A huge treat in the first set, this song left me standing there realizing that this trip was worth it and we still had two hours of music and another venue to go!

Second set includes some great jamming out of Second Skin and Low Spark but Surprise Valley still needs work to be able to compete with this anthem's former glory. One funny moment was watching Dave wait impatiently for Sunny to finish an impromptu drum solo after Low Spark. And I think that gave him too much time to think because he ended up botching the reentry into Surprise... Oh well, once they got it going again all was forgiven. C. Brown was a surprise in the late second set and Radio Child brought us home, the band firing on all cylinders.

The band returned to the stage for the encore but JB was missing. JoJo starts noodling on the organ, preparing for Pieces, and JB finally shows. Dave grabs some flowers that a fan had given him from his stack and turns and presents them to JB. Laughs and fake awkward hugs motivates JoJo to make kissy sounds in the mic.

The show is done at 10:30 sharp! We make the drive back to Omaha arriving around 1:30 am with just one wrong turn, but without noteworthy incident. With the lyrics "...if I don't pray my soul'll be lost..." ringing in our ears we settle in for a well deseved sleep.

We wake around 9 and head out for breakfast - should we eat in the hotel or at "The Diner" up the way? Of course, The Diner wins. Great greasy diner food is exactly what I needed. We walked back to our room and took a nap. Around 3 pm we rousted ourselves, I took a shower and put on my lucky Houser shirt. We walked up the hill to see where the venue was. Our hopes to meet up with Garrie early are dashed as he informs me that they are going to soundcheck for halloween... oh, to be a fly on the wall to hear that Morning Dew getting practiced...

Waiting for the show with my lucky Houser t-shirt on

Back at the hotel we run into Adam Stern and his buddy John and we join forces for dinner. We find a brewpub in the old town district and eat a solid meal before show time. We talk about the break up of Polytoxic due to the departure of CR Gruver to join Outformation. Breaks my heart to hear that this amazing three piece band has broken up.

Show time is looming and again Whim and I are faced with a dilemna; stay and have another drink or go to the venue for doors to see if we can secure a spot up close. Wisely we choose doors and for the second night in a row are on the rail in front of Dave. We help Garrie celebrate his birthday with a tequila margarita - emphasis on tequila! Garrie is such a great guy. He's always been so accommodating and happy to make conversation. On this night he is celebrating and in high spirits. Back out front to hold down our spots where I discover we are standing next to Fritz, Tom Coe, and a woman whose name escapes me wearing an "Iowa Women Rock" t-shirt, so the company is good. Show time and Sunny starts everything off with a plea to the crowd to sing Happy Birthday for Garrie, a request they oblige happily and with gusto. Sunny breaks out the diggerido and we are rocking in Papa Legba. The first half of the first set kicks some serious ass. I see Garrie, possibly during Disco, flashing googly eyes, a tongue and goofy ears at Jimmy - which sends Jimmy into hysterics. Each song is tight, not quite perfect but verging so close I forget where I am for a little while. The music is moving my body now and my mind is just a passenger. I find myself sweating and extremely thirsty as the band starts playing Papa Johnny Road, so I decide to get a beer for Whim and I. Bad decision. Not only does it take 15 minutes to get the damn beer the band plays a good 1/2 of Arlene before I can get back to my spot. Oh well - some times you've got to take one for the team!

The Arlene is epic. I've listened to it multiple times since the trip and it is definitely recommended listening. I set my beer on the stage in front of me and write another song down on my setlist. The security comes over and tells me to get it off the stage, I respect his demand, but return it there once the next song gets going. It's a game we'll play all night. Christmas Katie calls us 'Dancers' and insured that the good times would last all night. Jack was next and made me miss my little boy back home - and as they raged another monster jam I could feel the Chilly Water coming... I could see JoJo smiling ear to ear, then Dave turning to face Jimmy, JB saunters over close to Jimmy bobbing his head in appreciation, Todd was ripping through snare drums and Sunny is just getting down. Tom Coe and I trade using each other's shoulder to jump with glee into the air. Big crescendo, Candace's lights paint backgrounds while Jimmy's leaning back in mid-solo, smiling.

Setbreak I hook up with Garrie again to give him a final thank you. Another tallboy and I am ready for the second round. As Dave comes out on stage I am probably a little too tipsy but have decided the time has come... "Dark Star!" I scream. "Dark Star!" again, just for good measure. He's only eight feet away and I'm screaming like he's across the room - that darn tequila really highlights my idiot tendencies!

Rock gets us off to a great start but I wasn't really feeling it during the Stop Breaking Down and Time Zones. You Got Yours was one that I'd wanted to hear since it's return and here it was in all it's glory. Keane does such a great job with the leads on this, plus they nailed the tempo changes.

I hear JB steering the jam, harmonics and a couple strums and Driving Song. Are you kidding me? In the end I drove 1900 miles for these three shows, so in my own head this was my anthem. Into a nice, rollicking, Holden Oversoul. Giant Jam. Mellow Jam. Dark Star Jam! Another jam after that... into another underappreciated drums. Out of drums into, TIME IS FREE. This song is one of my favorites. It is so minimal, it feels like the tension built during a primal scream. The insistent bass line. The eerie lyrics; "Do you recall the day we all stopped to ask the question 'why?'" About half way though this song, JoJo starts playing the Chorus of the Bells, the band turns a corner and they are flying. Huge souring leads by Dave and Jimmy send this thing into overdrive. Dave and Jimmy were trading licks and looks, and my trip had just paid off in spades. Give ended with a bang while I crushed my hands clapping.

Vampire Blues got me thinking about all the damn gas I consumed on this trip but Knockin' Around the Zoo kept us rocking right out the back door. Amazing. Blown away. Speechless, I joined a crew of guys for some after show shenanigans.

I woke the next morning wishing I could sleep for another three hours, fortunately Whim got us on the road and pointed west. That afternoon, as we watched the sun set behind Long's Peak, looking like an interstellar hood ornament, Whim and I joked about keeping the car pointed west. Just keep driving and we'd be in Vegas. We both belly laugh at the idea, each secretly nodding to the reality we were about to return to. We were getting one of those sunsets that keeps getting more intense, changing it's colors and our lighting. I've done enough musical road trips to know that there is a diminishing return at some point; the fact that the journey is so enjoyable has as much to do with the departure from reality it represents as the 'events' being attended. Damn, why do I need to be so experienced and responsible? Just keep driving, chasing that star dancing on the horizon.

I am a 37 year old husband and father and who do I belong to?
Depends on who I'm with.
